About Disseny Indígena
Disseny Indígena is a project by Manuel Bauzà Ramis, a Mallorcan designer, to document, understand and bring back into circulation the design born in Mallorca: the traditional crafts, objects, festivals and architecture the island has made with its own hands and materials.
It began as a radio programme on Ona Mediterrània with the Honest association. Today it is an open platform in Catalan, Spanish and English.
It starts from a simple idea: design is not ornament, it is knowledge. Every piece is a specific place's answer to a specific need. The project reads each craft as territory, material and technique (design of proximity).
Method: each entry gathers published sources (linked at the end of every page), the craft's vocabulary, its timeline and the artisans listed in the Balearic Islands Crafts Register. Photographs credit author, year, source and licence. English texts are machine-translated from Spanish.
